Beyond Efficacy: Optimizing the COVID-19 Vaccine Experience Through Patient-Centered Platform Selection

As adult vaccination rates continue to face ongoing challenges, healthcare professionals must balance vaccine effectiveness, patient experience, and emerging immunological data when discussing vaccination options with patients. This session will explore current trends in adult immunization, including the drivers of vaccine hesitancy and declining coverage rates, while examining how vaccine platform selection may influence both patient perceptions and clinical outcomes. Comparative data on recombinant protein and mRNA vaccine platforms will be reviewed, with a focus on systemic reactogenicity profiles and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) that may impact vaccine acceptance and completion of recommended vaccination series. 

In addition to patient experience considerations, participants will examine the biological mechanisms underlying vaccine-induced immune responses, including differences in antibody subclass distributions and the potential for immunoglobulin class switching toward the IgG4 subclass following repeated vaccination. The session will provide a balanced review of current clinical data regarding IgG4 responses across vaccine platforms and discuss the potential relevance of these findings in the context of viral clearance, immune protection, and overall vaccine effectiveness. Practical strategies to improve vaccination coverage, including influenza and COVID-19 vaccine co-administration opportunities, will also be discussed to support informed, patient-centered vaccination decisions.
